OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGY (ENT)

The department of Otolaryngology at Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana is one of the best equipped and is known all over the country for its academics and quality work.

The department was started in 1969 with Dr. Som Nath Gupta as the first Head, under whose dynamic leadership the department grew to glorious heights by acquiring all the latest equipment available in the field at that time for all kinds of ENT investigations and surgeries. After his honourable retirement in 1992, the reins were taken over by Dr. R.S. Grewal until 1996, Dr. A.S. Khurana,thhen by Dr Hemant Chopra.

The good work of his predecessors is being taken forward to further glory by adding State-of-Art equipment every year. The entire faculty is totally dedicated towards undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. M.S. and D.L.O. courses are duly recognised by the Medical Council of India. The department is organizing yearly hands-on as well as Live Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Workshop which is well attended and appreciated at the National Level.

SPECIAL FACILITIES:-

1. Speech & Hearing Centre

State-of-the-art speech and hearing centre exists in the department. A dedicated speech therapist, Ms. Shivani Ganju is very popular with the patients and children who come for speech therapy. The centre is equipped with Audiometers, Tympanometers, BERA and CribogramGroup hearing aids

2. Neuro-otology Lab

It is located within the OPD premises and is used for special vestibular and facial nerve testing. It is equipped with ENG Optokinetics Air/Water CaloricsFacial Electroneuronography (Facial nerve stimulation)

3. State-of-the-art Microscopes

All kinds of microscopic laryngeal / ear surgeries are performed in the department. A newly acquired Video Microscope from Zeiss is available for latest surgeries in Otology & Laryngology.

4. Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Latest equipment for endoscopic sinus surgery are available, the department enjoys the credit of quality surgery in this field. More than dozen papers have been recognized & awarded at various forums everywhere.

5. Fibreoptics Nasopharyngoscope Laryngoscope for diagnosis and removal of foreign body. Bronchoscope.

SPECIALITY CLINICS

Vertigo Clinic : Detailed assessment of cases with vertigo (labyrinthine origin)

Tumour Clinic : Head and Neck cancer cases are taken up for comprehensive management and discussion.

PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATION

Various camps are held at regular intervals for detection and prevention of hearing loss besides treating the patients having general ENT ailments.

Patient awareness programme for cochlear implants in deaf mute children was organized in association with PIKA Medicare.

TRAINING

Apart from routine PG teaching, this is the only department in the North West region to train the residents on Temporal and Cadaver Dissection.

The residents have the luxury of witnessing live surgery of endoscopic sinus surgery and micro ear surgeries on monitors available in the OT.

STRENGTHS

Latest endoscopic sinus surgery extended to the surgery of Eye, Pituitary, CSF leak cases INCLUDING Micro ear surgeries, Microlaryngeal surgeries,Neuro-otology and Speech & Hearing Centre.

FURTHER PLANS

Department is actively considering to initiate Cochlear Implant Programme for Deaf /Mute children.
