History of Obstetrics and Gynaecology recounts the events and changes that have taken place over many centuries in society; changes in scientific knowledge and the way it is communicated, changes in technology and changes in the lives and times of those who have dedicated their efforts to the health of women and their progeny.
The Torch Bearers:-
At the beginning of Dayanand Medical College in 1964, the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology was headed by Dr. Raj Cheema in the old campus. In 1987, Dr. Rama Sofat took over as head. Facilities for endoscopic surgeries and colposcopy were introduced. The reigns of the department were taken over by Dr. Kumkum Avasthi in 2001 when the postgraduate and diploma degrees were duly recognized by the MCI. The Intrauterine Insemination lab was started and new gadgets for fetal monitoring were installed. Presently, the department is headed by Dr Ashima Taneja. The department now has a videocolposcope, LEEP electrosurgical procedure facilities, an IUI complex with TVS and sperm preparation facilities. There are nine consultants at present.
