Humble Beginnings
The Department of Psychiatry was started as a subspecialty way back in 1970 by Dr. R.L. Narang. It functioned out of a one room OPD in the old DMCH campus and there was no Indoor section. Patients used to be admitted in the Medical ward. Six months later a common House Surgeon was appointed for Psychiatry and Dermatology. In 1972, the Indoor was formally started by allotting 3 beds in the Medical ward for Psychiatric patients. This number grew to 10 in 1976 when a separate Psychiatry ward was started. The bed strength was increased to 20 in 1978 and subsequently to 30 in 1984.
Dr. Narang served the institute till 2000. Dr. Ranjive Mahajan joined the department in 1991 and has further contributed to elevate the status of the department to a centre of Academic and Clinical Excellence. The other faculty members Dr. Navkiran S. Mahajan who joined in 2002 & Dr. Rupesh Chaudhry who joined in 2007 are both alumni of the department. The services of a Clinical Psychologist (B.P. Mishra) and a Psychiatric Social Worker (Sukhmani Grewal) are also available full time.
Teaching Programme
The UG teaching programme is run in accordance with prescribed MCI guidelines. The department runs a robust P.G teaching programme. The PG teaching (M.D.) was started in 1985 with an intake of one student and subsequently increased to two. Since all infrastructure and faculty requirements were adequately met, the intake of PG students was increased to 3 in 2011. The department continues to participate in multiple international research projects. Our PG students have won awards at many PG development programmes
