Surgery is a scientific art and like any other art needs patience and perseverance for perfection. In the last hundred years or so practice of the surgery has taken long stride in the direction of excellence.
Dr. L.R. Pathak, popularly known as Dr.Rai, inoculated the department of surgery. In 1964, after the Arya medical school was upgraded to the Dayanand Medical College, Dr.Khanna took over the charge, and since then the department of the surgery has made tremendous progress towards the pathway of success. The two Stalwarts Dr.R.P Sharma and Dr.D.S. Gill became the legend of virtue and workmanship.
TEACHING PROGRAM
The undergraduate teaching program is conducted in accordance with the prescribed MCI guidelines. The starting of post graduation in 1978 was a feather in the cap. Today the department has produced more than 202 postgraduates. With the aim of expansion and keeping pace with the most modern scientific knowledge, the facilities like neurosurgery, plastic surgery, pediatrics surgery, urology, renal transplant, thoracic surgery, cardiac surgery and Bariatric surgery has been made available under the expert supervision. The Department has published 170 papers in indexed International and National journals. The department conducts international and national conferences, namely IAGES, ASICON, northern chapter of surgeons of India, workshops and CME’S.
CLINICAL SURGICAL SECTION
The department now boasts of state of art indoor and outdoor facilities. There are most modern 13 operation theatres with hydraulic remote controlled tables. Harmonic scalpels, enSeal, Laparoscopic sets with HD monitors and all latest gadgetry are present in the department. All OT’s have latest Drager anesthesia machines. The department has 4 surgical wards, 2 surgical recoveries, 2 surgical intensive care units, total bed strength 150 beds. The surgical recovery has 27 beds with central monitoring facilities. The pre-operative side has 15 beds, counseling room and a special PAC clinic. Surgery ICU has 24 beds with central monitors, 18 ventilators.

Triage is done in emergency, consults wherever required is taken. Emergency surgery is performed in Emergency operation theatres, which has 2 clean OTs & 2 septic OTs. The emergency has beds, with central monitoring facility, arterial blood gas analyzer, X-ray and ultrasound facility, Portable Echocardiography, ECG, etc.
