Physiol ogy is the backbone of medicine. The purpose of teaching Physiology is to know the functions, process, inter-relationships of the different organs and systems of the normal human being, a necessary introduction to their disturbances in the disease and to equip the students with normal standards of reference for use while diagnosing and treating deviations from normal. To fulfill this, the department is manned by dedicated and competent staff.
The Torch Bearers :
The de partment was established in the year 1964. During its infancy, the department worked in collaboration with Biochemistry under the headship of Dr. A.P. Sharma. He continued to steer the department for twenty five long years and contributed a lot to its upliftment. It was under his stewardship that MD Physiology was started with Dr. Lily Walia as the first PG Candidate.
The reins were then taken over in 1989 by Dr. (Mrs.) G.K. Ahuja, a teacher par excellence. It was in her tenure that the department got its independent identity in 1989. Under her leadership, MD course got recognized in 2005.
Present Status :
Current ly the department is under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Lily Walia who took over as head in 2005. From a handful of faculty members, the department has grown over the years and flourished having 7 faculty members at present. The entire faculty is actively involved in the teaching of MD, MBBS and B.Sc. Nursing students. The whole faculty has received formal training in medical education. The teaching of the department is well appreciated in student feedback.
