Dr. Bishav Mohan is a distinguished interventional cardiologist, public health advocate, and healthcare leader, currently serving as Professor and Head of Cardiology at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), Ludhiana. Born in 1968 in the rural village of Rampura Phool in District Bathinda, Punjab, he was raised in modest surroundings that instilled in him a deep sense of service and resilience. He completed his early education in a government school before pursuing an MBBS from Government Medical College, Patiala, followed by an MD in Medicine from Government Medical College, Amritsar. In 1998, he earned a DM in Cardiology from AIIMS, New Delhi, and further honed his clinical skills through a fellowship in invasive cardiology.
Dr. Mohan began his career at DMCH in 2001 as a Consultant in Cardiology. His clinical acumen and leadership quickly propelled him to senior roles: Professor in 2010, Additional Medical Superintendent in 2014, Medical Superintendent from 2020 to 2022, and since 2022, Professor and Head of the Department. He is also a Member of the Board of Management of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot (since 2023), and has been an Honorary Professor at the Public Health Foundation of India since 2020.
Over the years, Dr. Mohan has performed more than 20,000 cath lab procedures and presented over 150 scientific papers at national and international forums. He was awarded the Travel Fellowship by the Cardiological Society of India in 2011 for his excellence in research. His pioneering contributions to Indian cardiology include being the first in the world to use ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) for aluminum phosphide poisoning, introducing mechanical thrombolysis for high-risk pulmonary embolism patients, and leading non-surgical interventions for critical bleeding disorders, with over 1,000 such procedures performed in Punjab.
He pioneered neonatal and paediatric catheter-based cardiac interventions at DMCH in 2005, dramatically improving outcomes for the region’s youngest patients. He went on to introduce Punjab’s first complex TAVI (transcatheter aortic-valve implantation) and TEVAR (thoracic endovascular aortic repair) programmes and regularly performs advanced arterial and visceral embolizations for life-threatening bleeding and other vascular emergencies.
A tireless advocate for public health and preventive cardiology, Dr. Mohan has organized more than 250 cardiac camps and 300 awareness meetings across the state. For over two decades, he has operated a free cardiac outpatient clinic in his native village, providing care to underserved populations. He also launched a Tele-ECG program that brought cardiac diagnosis and consultation to remote areas.
Dr. Mohan played a central role in Punjab’s pandemic response. His coordination and clinical leadership were pivotal in managing resources and patient care. Notably, he led the STEMI project in Ludhiana, which provides free Tenecteplase thrombolysis at rural primary care centers—saving lives by enabling timely treatment of acute myocardial infarction.
He is the first person from the private sector to be awarded the India Hypertension Control Initiative (IHCI) for Ludhiana District - a national program under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, WHO, and ICMR—where he plays a critical role in standardizing hypertension care protocols and capacity building across Punjab. His involvement has directly impacted the scaling and sustainability of hypertension management within the public healthcare system, especially in primary care settings.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Mohan was at the forefront of Punjab’s medical response. He served as the Convenor of the Punjab State Expert Critical Group and the lead author of the Punjab COVID-19 Clinical Management Manual (July 2020). He was a member of the state’s vaccine monitoring committee, mortality audit committee, and the oxygen audit subgroup. He coordinated statewide clinical management for COVID patients and served as nodal officer of DMCH’s COVID unit, personally conducting daily rounds and overseeing treatment for more than 1,000 patients. He was also appointed COVID Nodal Officer for Punjab Police, training officers in PPE use and patient handling.
Dr. Bishav Mohan has authored and co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications in leading national and international journals. He has a strong research interest in scalable, low-cost cardiovascular solutions, particularly in resource-limited settings. His involvement in landmark studies—including polypill adherence trials, yoga-based cardiac rehabilitation, teleconsultation models, and ECMO in poisoning. His work reflects a commitment to evidence-based, scalable solutions in both clinical and public health domains.
Through his visionary leadership, clinical excellence, and public service, Dr. Bishav Mohan continues to drive innovation, equity, and compassion in healthcare. His ongoing mission is to expand rural access, strengthen preventive cardiology, and integrate technology to deliver scalable, sustainable healthcare solutions across India.
