Dr. Varun Mehta is presently working as Professor & Head of Unit Gastroenterology-II in DMCH. He has a keen interest in Academics and empathic patient care. He has a vast experience in the field of Gastroenterology spanning around one and half decades. He has a specific interest in the development of GI Endoscopy.

He has very keen academic interest and has about 45 publications in national and international journals of high academic repute.

Keeping with his interest in developing GI Endoscopy he pioneered the introduction of Endoscopic Ultrasound and Third Space Endoscopy in the region.  He has also pioneered the usage of Electrohydrolic Lithotripsy for large CBD stones in the regoin.

The therapeutic usage of EUS  in form of biliary procedures, treatment of WOPN and GI diversion procedures are all being carried out in DMCH by him.

He has been trained in Third Space Endoscopy, Image Enchanced Endoscopy and Double balloon enterosocpy. He has been trained by Professor Yama Moto  at JICHY Medical Center Japan and  similar training under Professor Zhou at Shinghai China.

He is the first to initiate the Endoscopy treatment for early cancers i.e. esophgus, stomach and colorectal, there by providing patients a minimal invasive and robust oncological treatment

He has organized many hands on workshops for disemination of the latest innovations in Endoscopic procedures for the benefit of the DM residents and the GI community.

He has to his credit about 230 POEM Procedures which as a single center speaks of his Endoscopic acumenship and the confidence patients have on his abilities.

Globally (To the best of the knowledge) he has also pioneered the usage of LAMS (Lumen apposing Metal Stent) in paediatric age group for walled of Pancreatic necrosis.

The management of large bile duct stones which was earlier on limited to surgical procedures can now be done with the help of Endoscope (Spy Glass Endoscopy with Electrohydraulic Lithiotripsy). He introduced this technology for the better outcomes of the patients in DMCH and to date a number of patients have been safely benefited by this.

Keeping in consideration his keen interest in the development of Endoscopic Procedures he has been elected as Secretary, Society of GI Endoscopy of India - North Chapter.

He has significant academic presence in the field of MASLD with publications in coordination with other Academic Organizations.

He has very enthusiastically  organized as organiziing Chairman recently concluded DMCH SGEI Endoscopy Vidayalay 2025 which had approximately 250 registrations from all over the country.

He is very enthusiastically working for safe disinfection practices in GI Endoscopy as well as an environment friendly intitative to minimize the carbon footprints in GI Endoscopy i.e. the safe practices for Green Endoscopy.
